Does it serve any purpose for kids to complete word search? Word searches are just used to occupy kids, right? There must not be any educational advantage of word search!
One of those contentious topics where you can only take one side — love ’em or loathe ’em — is the educational value of word search games for kids. You must not have imagined that the subject of a word search could be so contentious.
Here, we’ll attempt to persuade you that they’re an excellent tool for imparting literacy skills (in most circumstances).
The average youngster understands the meanings of about 6000 root words by the time they are in third grade; that seems like a lot, doesn’t it? It sounds far less impressive when you consider that youngsters with inferior achievement typically only know the definitions of 4000-words on average. Guess what, it’s harder for kids to read when they know fewer words. No parent or teacher wants their child to completely shun reading as a result of it.
Word decoding requires a significant amount of mental effort. When kids spend all their time deciphering words, they have less energy left over to read for comprehension. However, if you “simply know” what the words mean and are able to decode quickly, you may give your full attention to understanding and appreciating the text.
